The goose is native to the arctic region, in the white goose’s case it is the Canadian arctic.  It experiences some of the most extreme conditions on the planet. While feathers provide water proofing and some warmth, it is the down that provides the guts of the insulation. If you wanted any qualities in a duvet it would be light and incredible insulation. Goose down provides both of these things making it the ultimate duvet filling.

What should I consider when purchasing a goose down duvet?

If you do intend to buy a goose down duvet there are some factors to consider.

  1. Is it cassette constructed? Cassette construction means that the feathers are housed in three dimensional cubes within the duvet. Ensuring the equal spread of down.
  2. What percentage of the duvet is goose down? A way of making goose down duvets cheaper is diluting the down content with goose feathers. Check what percentage of down is contained in yours before you buy.
  3. What kind of goose down is contained within the duvet? There are three types of goose down. If your duvet is marked only “Luxury goose down duvet” check where the feathers come from. A goose down duvet of over £100 should contain at least Siberian goose down. If the cost is approaching £150 you should expect Hungarian goose down.

What tog should I choose for my goose down?

During the summer a tog 4.5 is recommended. Autumn winter would need a tog of 9. The winter calls for a tog of 13.5. You can purchase duvets at all these levels, or you can purchase an all season’s duvet. This duvet comes with 2 detachable duvets, of tog 4.5 and 9 making 13.5 for the winter.
